Autumn programme includes Mozart, Puccini and Rossini.

Barry Jobling's Thursday opera lectures are becoming a fixture now in Chiswick with a regular attendance of over 40+ people at St Michael's & All Angel's Church in Chiswick. The lectures, suitable for both newcomers to opera and fanatics alike, start promptly at 2.00 pm until 4.15 with a break for tea and biscuits. All for £8.00 a lecture, which is discounted to £7.00 if all 12 lectures of the series are booked. For details ring 0208 995 4271.

The new programme includes Werther by Massenet; two Mozarts (Cosi Fan Tutte and the popular Don Giovanni); Il Barbiere di Seviglia (Rossini), La Forza del Destino (Verdi); two early operas - Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria (Monteverdi) and Semele (Handel); La Rondine (Puccini); Ruslan & Lyudmila (Glinka); Mazeppa (Tchaikovsky) and to round off the series on 2 December Barry will give a lecture on the American composer Gian-Carlo Menotti who wrote among other things, The Medium, The Consul, Amahl and the Night Visitors and The Telephone.

Several of the operas discussed will be performed at the main opera houses during the coming season with Don Giovanni and Semele at the English National Opera and The Force of Destiny, Werther, Cosi, La Rondine and Don Pasquale at the Royal Opera House.

You will gain insight into operas being performed at Covent Garden and other venues in and around London this season, as well as operas of which there are fine recordings deserving wider recognition.

Barry is a professional pianist, singer and conductor who has been giving weekly lectures on opera for over 10 years. The lectures are illustrated with vintage and modern recordings. Barry also plays the piano and sings to highlight certain themes, much to the delight of his audiences.
