New museum at the Brunswick Club

A tribute to the PoW's

A new tribute museum at the Brunswick Club, Haldane Road, Fulham, was officially opened this week.

The Brunswick Club for Young People was opened in 1948 by the Duke of Edinburgh. It was set up by a group of British Prisoners of War who came together at Oflag 79, a camp near Braunschweig in Northern Germany. During the time of their imprisonment they decided to set up a memorial to their fallen comrades. This memorial took shape in the form of a youth project for under-privileged inner city children in Fulham. Greg Hands has also been a trustee of the club since 2003.

The new museum is a tribute to the PoW’s, showing their story from WWII to the creation of the club – and the opening was also attended by some of the original Prisoners of War involved in setting up the club.

Hammersmith & Fulham MP, Greg Hands, who participated in the cerimony, said: “The Brunswick Club is an excellent facility, offering services to younger people in our community – and I am proud to serve as one of their trustees.

“It was also a great pleasure for me to have been able to open their new museum this week – which depicts the tale of a group of extremely brave and courageous men who wanted to ensure the memories of their fallen comrades is never forgotten.”
