Conservatives campaign for zero tolerance
This week, newly published Home Office figures have revealed a massive rise in violent crime, robbery and burglary in Hammersmith & Fulham. Analysing the figures, local Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, Cllr Greg Hands, is worried that Hammersmith & Fulham is fast becoming the crime capital of London.
For the third quarter of 2004, across the borough robbery was up by 40%, burglary by 38% and violence against the person by 18%.
The increases for robbery and burglary were the highest in London and the 18% increase in violence against the person was the third largest increase across the Capital.
Equally, Police numbers in Hammersmith & Fulham have decreased since Labour took power in 1997, from 559 to 530 as of December 2004.
Commenting, Greg Hands said: “Tony Blair promised to be ‘tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime’. But under this Government police numbers are down and crime in Hammersmith & Fulham is escalating.
“These figures are particularly disturbing, as they show the biggest increases in London for robbery and burglary and the third biggest rise for violence against the person.
“The longer this Government is in power, the less safe our streets are becoming. It is time to reclaim our streets. It is time to crack down on crime.
“I want to see local police numbers restored, zero tolerance policing introduced and tougher sentences given to criminals when they are caught.”
