"No road sweeper for up to three weeks", says Crondace Road resident.
This week, Hammersmith & Fulham Conservative Group Spokesman, Cllr Greg Hands is demanding that the Labour Council delivers action on street cleaning, rather than spin and promises about “a smarter borough”.
Greg’s email inbox and mail-bag is increasingly full of residents´ complaints about litter on their roads and the lack of street cleaning all around Hammersmith & Fulham. In response, the Town Ward Councillor wants to see genuine twice weekly street cleaning, with main roads being swept every day; all street cleaning to happen after bins are emptied, not the other way round; and Eurobins (a.k.a. palladins) to be encouraged at large blocks.
Cllr. Hands has given details of some of the many complainants:
Jacqueline Neagle of Sherbooke Road, Fulham, emailed Greg to say: “People are always throwing cans, crisp packets, Kentucky Fried Chicken and burger wrappers down on the pavements.
“I occasionally see a road sweeper but we all complain that sometimes the rubbish lays for over a week without being swept up. I often go out myself to do this. In recent weeks I have seen several rats scurrying down the road.”
Jeremy Maddocks of Munster Road, SW6, told Cllr. Hands: “One of the basic services which any resident expects is a clean and tidy community. It is sad for any Hammersmith & Fulham resident to venture into Wandsworth and see the exemplary way in which they maintain the Borough cleanliness.”
Conrad Marais of Sinclair Gardens, Hammersmith W14,complained to Cllr. Hands that: “In Richmond Way and Sinclair Gardens the situation has deteriorated. The area is disgraceful. It is littered with rubbish, empty beer cans, food, vomit and people regularly urinate in the area.”
Annabel Barkes of Crondace Road, Fulham, told Greg: “I believe at one time in the past we were supposed to have the street swept every other day. Then it changed to twice a week (not that we ever got that service). At the worst point we would not see a road sweeper for up to three weeks at a time. Now I think we get one visit a week from a hardworking, but overstretched road-sweeper, and sometimes not at all.”
Greg Hands has commented:
“Labour claim to be delivering ‘a smarter borough’. The experience of real residents does not bare that out.
“The solution is simple – twice weekly collections, actually delivered; streets swept after rubbish collections, not before; adequate provision of bins in larger blocks, not bags left to pile up in corners.
“For all the tax we pay, it is only reasonable to expect them to keep the place clean and tidy!
“The truth is that the Labour Council are failing local people. It is time for action, not words.”
