“Over the top!”, say Conservatives
Conservative Environment spokesman, Councillor Nicholas Botterill, has hit out at the Labour Council this week, after it was discovered that the recent road works at Fulham Broadway cost a staggering £2.5 million.
The works which began in February and have only just been completed, essentially re-paved and re-surfaced the area from the junction of Dawes Road and North End Road, round to Fulham Broadway station on Fulham Road. Not only has this massively disrupted an already congested stretch of road for a prolonged period, but has left the road narrower, with 540 square feet (50 m²) being converted to pavement!
Commenting, Councillor Botterill said: “Many of our local roads need severe attention – and I do not oppose re-surfacing works. However, £2.5 million is an excessive amount to spend on such a small space, especially considering it has left less space for traffic to get through!
“Comparisons with other boroughs has shown that the cost of resurfacing pavements in York stone should come to no more than £140 per square metre and yet the equivalent figure here is many times higher. Coupled with the disaster created on King Street, we need a serious examination as to how road projects are administered and how they come to cost so much money.”
