'Think Safe Drink Safe' during the Rugby World
Cup.
| Pub-going rugby fans
are being advised to 'Think Safe Drink Safe' during the Rugby World
Cup. The council and many of the borough's premises have teamed
up to tell drinkers how they can avoid hangovers and make sure they
get home safely after a night's drinking. The Rugby World Cup (10th October - 22nd December) will see lots of fans enjoying matches in pubs over the coming months. As part of the council's Drug and Alcohol Action Team campaign for safe drinking, there are targeted campaigns for sports/ social events and the festive season. For the Rugby World Cup an alcohol awareness poster has been sent out to licensees in Shepherd's Bush, Fulham Broadway and Hammersmith Town Centre as well as GP practices and information services around the borough. The poster gives advice on how to drink safely and lessen the risks of damage in the short term. Tips include: not driving after a night of heavy drinking, drinking long drinks like beer, not having a 'hair of a dog' - it puts a strain on your liver. The campaign is also supported by the borough's Bar Charter and Pub Watch schemes which hold meetings with licensees to promote the responsible management of premises. Scott Assender, manager of the Walkabout pub at Shepherd's Bush Green is supporting the Rugby World Cup campaign: "The posters are really effective - they offer common sense advice on drinking but also realise that people want to enjoy themselves at the same time." Cllr Reg McLaughlin, Deputy for Social Inclusion said: "This campaign is part of the council's local alcohol strategy which has been recognised as good practice by the Government. "Following the successful Football World Cup campaign we are again pushing the message of safe, responsible, drinking - 'Think Safe, Drink Safe'." |

TEN WAYS TO AVOID
A HANGOVER
AND ENJOY THE WORLD CUP! 1. Pace your drinks Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks. Drink ‘longer drinks’ like beer and drink more slowly. 2. Don’t join in every round Missing a couple can make a difference! 3. Know your limit Men: 3 to 4 units a day, women: 2 to 3 units a day. 4. What’s in a unit then? See table below. 5. Avoid drinking on an empty stomach A full stomach can slow down alcohol absorption. 6. The ‘hair of the dog’ as a hangover cure is a myth Drinking more alcohol will put a strain on your liver. Avoid alcohol for 48 hours after a session. 7. Black coffee won’t sober you up Only time can remove alcohol from your bloodstream! 8. After a night of heavy drinking, you may still be over the legal drink-drive limit the next morning - you could also be unfit for work. 9. Even after 1 drink you could be over the drink-drive limit - it depends on several factors, including the way your body breaks down alcohol. 10. It takes at least one hour to break down 1 unit of alcohol in the body. |
