Fat dissolving pumps to be installed in Barons Court.
Metronet Rail, responsible for maintaining two thirds of the London Tube, is using a new fat dissolving pump to maintain free flowing drains. The pump contains an environmentally friendly seaweed enzyme that dissolves fat from Tube station cafes, preventing blockages.
Metronet installed the new pumps underneath cafe sinks to capture any build up of unwanted fat or grease. The pumps contain an enzyme known as KELP, a nutrient that dissolves fat.
This new method of working will help prevent loss of service facilities to the public and fat seepage onto Tube station stairs and ticket halls.
“It's the first time we have tried using a natural way to prevent drain blockages. It's completely changed how we work - this way no chemicals are used,” said Metronet's Project Manager, Milan Mladenovic.
The new pumps are easier for cafe owners to use as they operate on a timer base and have been installed at Great Portland Street and Preston Road Tube Stations. Barbican and Barons Court Tube Stations are next in line to receive the new fat dissolving pumps.
