Council's summer activities

The council and partners have put together a packed
programme of summer holiday activities for children, young people, families and adults.

Cllr Melanie Smallman, cabinet member for education,
said: "We want to give local families the chance to try out new activities, such as our mobile climbing
wall, and to have an enjoyable and safe time during the
summer holiday. Our excellent play service is offering flexible times for children's activities this year and
there are some great free community events and festivals to look forward to - including Play Day on 3 August and the Athletics for All celebration at the newly- revamped Linford Christie Stadium on 4 September."

Highlights of the summer programme include:

Play Day - 1.00-4.00pm, Wednesday 3 August
The borough's annual celebration of play at Ravenscourt Park.
Live music, arts and crafts, story-telling, sports, face painting, bouncy castles, clowns, balloon modellers and performances by children. Information and advice
about childcare, play facilities and other services also available. Due to be officially opened with a
balloon launch by council leader, Cllr Stephen Burke, at 1.30pm.

Mobile climbing wall Look out at Play Day, the Linford Christie Stadium
Athletics for All celebration and an estate or park near you for the borough's mobile
climbing wall. Bought by the council with a Lottery grant, the 18ft high
fiberglass rockface is suitable for children and young people of all ages. As well
as being used at community and sporting events, the climbing wall will
be available to all schools in the borough during term-time. For details

Holiday schemes for under 8s at borough early years centres

Holiday schemes at council-run centres - ages 5 to 12 years

The council offers registered childcare, learning and play
for children aged 5-12 through the holidays. Summer schemes run from 27
July-2 September. You can now book full day care in five centres on
weekdays from 9am-5.30pm or for part of the day from 11am-3pm. This
summer each centre is offering themed activities ranging from cooking,
science and nature to drama and dance. Book in advance on 020 8753 3786.

Junior youth schemes - Ages 8-13
White City Centre, W12. Tel: 020 8753 3764. Free drop-in arts, crafts,
games and sports. 27 July-2 September, Mon-Fri, 6-8pm, Sat, 10am-4pm.

Edward Woods Community Centre, W11. Tel: 020 7603 2324. 1-26 August
Mon-Fri, 10am-3pm.

Positive Activities for Young People aged 11-19
Tel: 020 8753 3749 to register. Runs from 25 July-26 August.
Organised by the council's youth service. Activities include digital
photography and video production, singing and songwriting, outdoor
adventure sports, driving, residential experiences, drama and computing.
Takes place at Avonmore, Fulham Cross, White City and Old Oak youth
projects and Phoenix High School.

U Project - Looking Forward Programme, White City Youth Project

For school leavers ages 15-16; 27 June-2 September, Mon, Wed & Fri,
11am-4pm.
Also run by the youth service. Activities include careers support and
advice, work placements, arts and sports activities, a 5-day outdoor
education residential course.

Linford Christie summer sports camp
Tel: 020 7736 1504/1724. Ages 8-15, 1-19 August.
Huge range of activities, including cricket, football, athletics, rugby,
tennis, American football and baseball. All sessions led by qualified
coaches from the council and local sports clubs.

Athletics for All celebration - Linford Christie Stadium - Sunday 4
September, 11am to 3.30pm
Athletics and family fun sessions, run by the council and coaches from
Thames Valley Harriers, to celebrate the opening of the stadium's new
track and facilities. Attractions include a community mile for all ages
and abilities and mobile climbing wall.

Parks summer multi-sport camps

Held on all-weather pitches at Ravenscourt Park, W6 (25 July-12 August)
and Hurlingham Park, SW6 (8-26 August).
Run by qualified coaches. Sports include football, rugby, hockey,
cricket and climbing.

Sports for young people with disabilities
Run through the Hammersmith and Fulham Action on Disability holiday
programme, SW6. Tel: Emma Gentle on 020 7471 8522.
The football and athletics club for people with learning difficulties
will continue to run across the summer on the weekend. For more

Sports mobile programme
Tel: 020 7736 1504/1724. Ages 6-16. 25 July-26 August.
The sports development team will be visiting housing estates during the
summer holiday. Wide range of free drop-in sports activities and whole
activity days, featuring the mobile climbing wall.

Phoenix Summer Sports Camp
Phoenix High School, W12. Tel: 020 8743 4442. Ages 8-16; 25 July-19
August, Mon-Fri, 10.30am-3.30pm.
Run by Active Planet and the Phoenix Neighbourhood Renewal Programme.
Activities include football, basketball, trampolining and street dance
as well as trips to the BBC and QPR.

Library events - The Reading Voyage (free summer reading challenge)
Tel: 020 8753 3813 or pick up a leaflet from libraries. Ages 4-11; 23
July-11 September.
Pick up a collector's folder, crammed with activities and puzzles to
complete. Children collect sticker sheets as well as free gifts as they
sail through the challenge. Collect all six sets of stickers and you
will be invited to a special celebration to receive your medal and
certificate. Log on to www.readingvoyage.org.uk at your local library
and discover more about your favourite authors and which books other
children recommend you take on your voyage.

Libraries - Free sea and pirate-themed story and craft sessions

Free basic skills summer courses in reading, writing, maths and
computing. 11-29 July, 10am-3pm. Motor vehicle and bicycle maintenance -
one-day classes in July.

Summer programme for people over 16 with learning disabilities. Includes
