Kneehigh Theatre, recognised as one of the UK's most inventive companies, take Greek tragedy and turn it on its head at the Lyric following their success with The Red Shoes at the Lyric Hammersmith in 2002 and The Wooden Frock at BAC in 2003. Award-winning director Emma Rice explores the thrill of wickedness, as the chorus of women (played mostly by men) play truant from mundane life under the influence of Dionysus, the god of dance, wine and revelry. In this witty retelling of Euripides' classic, Kneehigh celebrate and delight in throwing off the bounds of convention, with the joyful anarchy that audiences have come to expect from this groundbreaking theatre company.
