"I urge both the Council and British Transport Police to make plans for action here”, says Hands
Following media reports of a new crime blitz on the London Underground by British Transport Police, local Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, Cllr Greg Hands, is calling for the operation to come to Hammersmith & Fulham – which has the highest rate of tube users of any London borough.
The operation, which is being carried out in conjunction with Westminster City Council, is focussed on series of "blitz" raids to drive out pickpockets, beggars and other "anti-social elements" from the Tube. There is also an effort to crack down on ticket touts and fare dodgers.
Commenting, Cllr Hands said:
“It is a sad reflection on London in 2004 that people have to be constantly wary of pickpockets when using the Underground, as well as being constantly harangued by beggars and forced to witness anti-social, yobbish behaviour.
"A crack down on these things is long overdue and I congratulate Westminster Council on their initiative to start this operation.
“As the borough with the highest rate of Tube users in London, this blitz would be particularly welcome in Hammersmith & Fulham and I urge both the Council and British Transport Police to make plans for action here.”
