There are currently around 300 volunteers working for the Hammersmith
Hospitals NHS Trust voluntary services department. Apart of The
Cocktail Crew, volunteers also take part in activities such as
radio DJ, attending to patient flowers and library trolley.
This year's winners include also the Harmony Variety Group, a
theatre group for special needs and underprivileged people; the
Indian Muslim Welfare Society, which aims to address the needs
of its community through a range of activities and services; The
Vassall Centre Trust, providing barrier-free work space for disabled
people; and Cheadle and District Home Link, assisting elderly
and housebound people to maintain independence in their own homes.
All winners have been nominated by members of the public who have
either benefited from their work, or seen the positive effect
on their community. The Award is only given to those groups where
volunteers are judged to have regularly devoted their time to
providing an outstanding level of help to other people.
Fiona Mactaggart, Minister for the Voluntary and Community Sector,
said: "This is well-deserved recognition for some of hundreds
of thousands of unsung heroes who are active day in, day out in
our communities.
"Their engagement in their communities is a vital resource
- it empowers individuals, boosts local communities and enriches
the nation. We owe all of our volunteer groups an enormous debt
and it is appropriate that their work is being recognised during
the national Volunteers' Week.
