Higher council tax?
To coincide with National Wardens Week, Greg Hands MP has today expressed concern that the Government has covertly axed central funding for Hammersmith & Fulham’s four community wardens.
Local taxpayers have been left to foot the bill if councils want to continue with the schemes. This is despite the fact that the police precept on council tax to pay for local policing in Hammersmith & Fulham has already soared by 210 per cent since 1997.
These wardens were once proclaimed by the government as a key part in tackling crime and the fear of crime. Yet their funding in Hammersmith & Fulham has been cancelled by John Prescott’s department.
Greg explained: “Communities that want to keep their wardens and tackle yob behaviour will have to pay higher council taxes – on top of the soaring police levy on council tax bills.”
