When You Cure Me @ the Bush Theatre

WHEN YOU CURE ME is a great example of what The Bush does best: a complex and compassionate play commissioned by the theatre from an exceptionally promising young writer, given the first-rate production it deserves. Thorne tackles the difficult subject of human relationships put under impossible pressure and explores it with a forensic eye, and Bush Artistic Director Mike Bradwell directs a wonderful cast which includes Gwyneth Strong (Only Fools and Horses) and Olivier-nominated Samuel Barnett (The History Boys). WHEN YOU CURE ME is the final production in The Bush’s TAINTED LOVE season that has included Dennis Kelly’s AFTER THE END and the current BOTTLE UNIVERSE by Simon Burt.

Rachel and Peter were in the first flush of teenage romance when Rachel was attacked; she’s now completely bedbound, inexplicably paralysed, and the people that love her best, her mother and her boyfriend, are at a loss as to how to handle a situation so completely beyond their experience. Being the centre of attention at their school doesn’t help, and Golden Couple James and Alice are suddenly their best friends. Rachel hates her mother fussing, and doesn’t want anyone except Peter. Peter doesn’t know what he wants, but he thinks he can make her better again. When You Cure Me is a tender, deep and beautiful exploration of love and misunderstanding, and of how ordinary people attempt to think about the unthinkable.

Jack Thorne won the RSC / Marlowe Other Prize for his play Wanting to Laugh Best in 2002. His play Stacy was recently staged at The Tron Theatre, Solids was part of Paines Plough's 2004 Wild Lunch Season and Fanny & Faggot was seen at the Edinburgh Festival 2004. He is currently under commission from Channel 4 for a new drama. His extraordinary new play is directed by Bush artistic director Mike Bradwell and, in addition to Gwyneth Strong as Rachel’s mother Angela and Samuel Barnett as Peter, introduces the young talents of Morven Christie playing Rachel and Daniel Bayle and Lisa McDonald as James and Alice.
"a real master of brevity and accuracy in social observation” (Stage on Fanny & Faggot)
