The borough's fourth literature season, Wordwide 2003, brings together a fabulous series of events and activities featuring renowned international and local writers from as far a field as the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, Ireland and Britain. This year's theme is journeys.

Wordwide, which runs from 26 September to 10 October, features a range of workshops and creative projects in libraries and other venues throughout the borough. Rough Guide writer Jean McNeil will be running an intensive two-day workshop for aspiring travel writers on 27 and 28 September at Fulham Library, while acclaimed novelist and playwright Courttia Newland, who grew up in Shepherds Bush, will be offering one-to-one fiction surgeries for new writers on 27 September at Shepherds Bush Library.

Other well-known names taking part in this year's festival include Shepherds Bush-based writer and agony aunt Virginia Ironside, who will read from her latest book Janey and me - Growing up with my mother; leading west London novelist and Evening Standard columnist Tim Lott and Arabic writer, journalist and broadcaster Jad El Hage. There will also be a chance to meet leading children's authors Ian Whybrow and Beverley Naidoo.

Wordwide will be officially launched in the Mayor's Foyer, Hammersmith Town Hall, at 6pm on Friday, 26 September by the borough's mayor, Cllr Charlie Treloggan, and celebrated author and poet E A Markham, who will read from his collections of poetry. E A Markham is patron of Westwords, the literature development agency for West London, which has joined forces with the council's arts team to help run this year's Wordwide festival.
