CHRISTMAS IS MILES AWAY

Chloë Moss is a new writing rising star, swiftly becoming recognised as a writer with an uncommon gift for capturing the essence of young people’s lives, in the way they view the world and how they express it (or fail to) in language.

Her debut play, A Day in Dull Armour (staged at the Royal Court) was followed by the delicate, supremely understated How Love I Spelt, which was a quiet hit at The Bush in September 2004 when Chloë was The Bush writer in residence. Christmas is Miles Away more than fulfils the promise these plays displayed, and was staged to acclaim at Manchester’s Royal Exchange last November.

Christmas is Miles Away examines the friendship between Christie and Luke, two Mancunian sixteen year olds, and the very different paths they pursue over two years from 1989. They start out as school friends who like nothing better than camping out, drinking lager and talking about girls to a soundtrack of Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses. But when their lives are complicated by girlfriends and the varying courses they pursue - one to the Army, one to art school bohemianism - their friendship is stretched to breaking point. In dialogue stunningly true to life, Chloë Moss subtly examines the changing nature of their relationship as they negotiate the dangerous shoals of adulthood.

Christmas is Miles Away is directed by the Royal Exchange’s Associate Artistic Director Sarah Frankcom and stars Georgia Taylor (Coronation Street), David Judge (himself a young writer in residence at Manchester’s Contact Theatre) and Paul Stocker.
