The Arts Society Chiswick will welcome historian Mark Meredith on Thursday 9 April for an evening talk titled “Frick: The Man & His Museum”.

Meredith will explore the extraordinary life of Henry Clay Frick, the ruthless American industrialist whose legacy shifted from union-breaking steel magnate to one of the most prominent art collectors of his generation. Frick’s transformation—from surviving an assassination attempt to founding one of New York’s most revered cultural institutions—offers a dramatic lens into the Gilded Age and the power of patronage.

Known for his engaging storytelling and deep knowledge of American social history, Meredith will guide the audience from rural Pennsylvania to the opulent salons of Manhattan, revealing how Frick’s personal ambition and taste shaped the museum that bears his name.

The Frick Collection is one of New York’s most atmospheric and admired art museums, housed in the former Fifth Avenue mansion of the industrialist. Designed from the outset to become a public institution, the house preserves the intimate feel of a private residence while displaying masterpieces by artists such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Turner and Goya. Its rooms are arranged much as Frick intended, with paintings, sculpture and decorative arts shown in domestic settings rather than traditional gallery spaces

Guests are welcome, with entry priced at £15 on the door. The fee is deducted from the annual subscription for anyone choosing to join the Society on the night.

Doors open at 7pm, with the private bar available from the same time. Tickets are £15 on the door, with the fee deducted from the annual subscription for anyone who chooses to join on the night. Guests are warmly welcomed.

Membership of the Arts Society Chiswick includes ten expert lectures on the second Thursday of every month (except August and December) and the opportunity to participate in tours, visits, social events and Special Interest Days.
