The highly anticipated Capital Theatre in Shepherd’s Bush has announced a delay to its opening, pushing back its inaugural production of Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage to 2026.
Originally slated to open in October 2025, the new 620-seat venue — located within Westfield London — has encountered planning and design challenges during early construction. The delay means that performances of Dirty Dancing will now begin next year, with revised dates yet to be confirmed.
The theatre spans 35,000 square feet and is being developed by the creative team behind The Bridge Theatre, @sohoplace, The Young Vic, and the Kit Kat Club. It promises a purpose-built, state-of-the-art experience for audiences in west London.
In a statement, the venue’s producers said, “Due to encountering planning and design issues during the early stages of construction of the Capital Theatre at Westfield London, the opening date of Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage is to be delayed.”
They added that the postponement will allow for significant upgrades to the venue, including a full-size, double-height rehearsal studio and expanded backstage and front-of-house facilities.
“These additional extensions and improvements require the build to extend beyond the end of 2025, so that the show and the brand-new theatre can open in 2026,” the statement continued.
Ticket holders are being contacted directly, although it remains unclear whether full refunds will be offered. The producers have apologised for the inconvenience and pledged to keep audiences informed as plans evolve.
