The cubs aged 8 to 10 were introduced to the concept of starting a business
September 22, 2025
Young members of the 10th Fulham Cub Scouts took part in a hands-on business initiative at the North End Road Market Open Day this Saturday (21 September), launching four micro-businesses and raising £749 in a single afternoon.
The Cubs, aged 8 to 10, developed and ran their own stalls, selling items ranging from rubber duck-themed merchandise and fidget toys to cold drinks and curated “calm and kind” gift bags. Each team, known as a “Six,” was given £100 in seed funding and paired with an adult mentor to guide them through the process of planning, pricing, and managing their operations.
The event was designed to introduce children to basic entrepreneurial concepts, including profit and loss, customer engagement, and marketing. Leigh Porter, Cub Leader at 10th Fulham, said the initiative aimed to go beyond traditional badge work. “We want our Cubs to experience the thrill of starting a business and understand how psychology and marketing play out in the real world,” she said.

In addition to sales, the Cubs distributed 500 leaflets and generated interest in a new Cub Pack, adding several names to their waiting list. The teams are expected to repay their seed funding with 10% interest by next summer, and plan to reinvest remaining stock and profits into future ventures.
The next phase of the project will focus on social enterprise, with ideas under discussion including a community-funded park bench featuring a QR code that tells the Cubs’ story.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort to teach teamwork, financial literacy, and civic engagement through practical experience.
