The Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Cllr Charlie Treloggan, will be among an estimated 200,000 people across the UK to don their sunglasses on national Shades Day on Tuesday 21 June.

The Mayor will be at his coolest as he steps out in his shades with local resident Ivy Temple to support the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's annual eye health awareness campaign.

Shades Day is part of a national campaign to highlight the importance of looking after your eyes in the sun and raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Over exposure to the sun's UV rays can increase the risk of developing eye conditions such as cataracts.

The Mayor said, "Most people are aware of the harm the sun can do to skin but the damage it can do to eyes is less well known."

Tom Pey, Guide Dogs' Director of Policy and Development, said, "Funding research into eye diseases is essential to understand the causes of blindness and how to prevent this. Shades Day is an ideal opportunity to think about eye care. Good sun glasses, especially the wraparound type, protect the eyes from damaging UV sunlight."
