Take Part in Maggie's Night Hike

See London like you've never seen it before and help people with cancer

Maggie’s West London is encouraging people to take a night time walk on the 8 October to help raise funds for the centre at Charing Cross Hospital.

On the hike you will visit two Maggie’s centres and support people with cancer, their family, and friends. The walk is suitable for all experience levels with the option of a 10 or 20 mile walk and every walker will get a free Maggie’s t-shirt.

It is hoped that over 200 walkers will take part with a fundraising target of £50,000.

Furzana previously took part in the night walk with her Maggie’s Bereavement Support Group.

“We all met through the Maggie’s Bereavement Support Group two years ago in Summer 2018. There were seven of us originally and we connected as a group, stayed in contact afterwards, and a few of us took part in the night hike.

“Seeing friendship and companionship amongst all the walkers was a special experience, enjoyable too – enjoyable is a weird word for us as it was difficult to imagine enjoying anything again but it’s a word we seem to use more – we enjoy seeing each other, and we enjoyed the walk.

“To anyone who hasn’t done it before, I’d say this: absolutely do it.”

In order to live more positively with cancer, Maggie believed people needed information, stress-reducing strategies, psychological support, and the opportunity to meet other people in similar circumstances in a relaxed and beautiful setting. All Maggie’s centres are individually designed to feel like a home and all have a big kitchen table at their heart.

Over the course of the last year the charity has been supporting thousands of people who have been impacted negatively by coronavirus and continuing to support hundreds of people each week affected by cancer.

Maggie’s West London relies entirely on voluntary donations to allow them to keep on developing their unique programme of free support for all those living with cancer in the area.

The registration fee is £20 but you can use the discount code NIGHTHIKE5 for £5 off your registration. The sponsorship target is £150 for the 10 mile route and £225 for the 20 mile one.

You can read more about the event on their website (which includes a map of the routes).

Maggie’s Centres offer practical and emotional support to people with any type of cancer, at any stage, for free. They receive no government funds and rely on the generosity of supporters. They focus on the things that really make a difference, like money worries, help with stress and depression, managing side-effects, relationships and family support: all the things that are so important for patients and their families.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We've always done that and won't be changing, in fact we'd like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

We are therefore asking our readers to consider offering financial support to these efforts. Any money given will help support community and public interest news and the expansion of our coverage in this area.

A suggested monthly payment is £8 but we would be grateful for any amount for instance if you think this site offers the equivalent value of a subscription to a daily printed newspaper you may wish to consider £20 per month. If neither of these amounts is suitable for you then contact info@neighbournet.com and we can set up an alternative. All payments are made through a secure web site.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.

If you do support us in this way we'd be interested to hear what kind of articles you would like to see more of on the site – send your suggestions to the editor.

For businesses we offer the chance to be a corporate sponsor of community content on the site. For £30 plus VAT per month you will be the designated sponsor of at least one article a month with your logo appearing if supplied. If there is a specific community group or initiative you'd like to support we can make sure your sponsorship is featured on related content for a one off payment of £50 plus VAT.
