Engineering works will mean substantial disruption this weekend
Engineering works this weekend is likely to lead to major disruption as sections of both the District and Piccadilly lines will be closed.
Between August 2005 and March 2006, eight weekend closures have been scheduled to take place from Acton Town to Hyde Park Corner on the Piccadilly line and Earl's Court to Acton Town on the District line to enable major track replacement works to be undertaken by Metronet Rail SSL.
Closures are presently planned to take place on 15/16 October, 22/23 October 2005, 14/15 January 2006, 21/22 January, 25/26 February and 4/5 March 2006. Further closures will need to take place during 2006 and 2007.
On Sunday 16th October South West Trains are also carrying out engineering works which will mean that there will be no service between Barnes and Clapham Junction. If you are heading into central London from Brentford, Chiswick and Putney you will need to use a replacement bus service.
There will also be no service on the District and Circle lines between Whitechapel and Earl's Court on 19th & 20th, 26th & 27th November.
Metronet Rail SSL is responsible for the maintenance of the District line
track that is being renewed between Barons Court and Ravenscourt Park
and the Piccadilly line track between Hammersmith and Acton Town as the
District and Piccadilly lines run above ground in parallel to each other.
Bob Thorogood, District line General Manager said, " We appreciate that these much-needed and necessary engineering works will inconvenience some passengers but we have carefully planned these works to cause minimal disruption. The only alternative to these weekend closures is to close sections of line completely. This would inconvenience a greater number of people."
Alternative transport to affected destinations this weekend is as follows:
Between Heathrow Airport and Central London Ticket acceptance arrangements will be in place with the Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect service.
LU customers who hold a valid London Underground Zone 1-6 Travelcard (both season and day tickets) or a Freedom Pass, are allowed to travel between Heathrow Airport and Paddington on the Heathrow Express or the Heathrow Connect service between Heathrow Airport and Ealing Broadway on this weekend and the other planned weekend closures only.
Holders of Travelcards which do not cover all six zones must buy a ticket extension before they travel.
Children under 16 travel free on the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect service when ccompanied by an adult with a valid ticket.
Valid Underground tickets will also be accepted on South West Trains between Richmond, Vauxhall and Waterloo. However, on Sunday 16 October only, South West Trains will operate a rail replacement bus while Network Rail also carries out engineering works.
