One of west London’s longest-standing youth organisations will celebrate a century of service this June, as the Sulgrave Club on Goldhawk Road marks 100 years of supporting young people in the local community.

Founded in 1926, the club began life in Sulgrave Road, established by local volunteers who wanted to provide a safe, structured environment for boys growing up in an area marked by overcrowded housing and limited opportunities. It quickly became known as a place where young people could find friendship, guidance and a sense of belonging at a time when formal youth services were scarce.

In 1936, the club moved to its current home on Goldhawk Road, where it has remained ever since. Over the decades it has evolved from a boys’ club into a modern, inclusive youth centre offering sports, mentoring, creative programmes and year-round support for children and teenagers from across Hammersmith & Fulham. Generations of local families have passed through its doors, and many former members credit the club with helping them navigate education, employment and the challenges of growing up in the city.

To mark its centenary, the Sulgrave Club is hosting a special weekend of celebrations on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June, bringing together its rich history and its ongoing mission to empower young people.

A At the heart of the celebrations is a major exhibition that bridges the club’s past and future. Curated by Cinzia D’Ambrosi, the display will feature archival material, heritage narratives and rarely seen photographs charting the club’s 100-year journey — from its early days in Sulgrave Road to its role today as a vital community hub.

Alongside the historical material, visitors will be able to explore ‘Lens on a Century’, a new documentary photography showcase created by local young people. Mentored by the Photojournalism Hub, the project gives current members the chance to tell their own stories, reflecting on what the club means to them and how it shapes their lives. The exhibition includes interviews with former members, personal memories, memorabilia and contemporary portraits capturing the spirit of the club today.

The exhibition will be open to the public at:

The Sulgrave Club, 287 Goldhawk Road, W12 8EU

  • Saturday 27 June: 2pm – 6pm
  • Sunday 28 June: 12 noon – 4pm
