Frances Stainton
September 1, 2025
Friends and colleagues have been paying tribute to former Mayor and long-time Fulham councillor Frances Stainton, who died on 22 July, shortly after her 90th birthday.
Hammersmith & Fulham Conservatives announced her death, saying, “ Former Mayor, Frances Stainton sadly passed away last Friday. Frances was a much-loved councillor first representing Walham, and later Parsons Green & Walham.
“ During her 32 year council career she served twice as Mayor, as Chief Whip and twice in the Cabinet. She was a wonderful colleague and long-serving councillors will remember someone who was a very astute political operator and always an amazing mentor to many councillors.
“She was a local titan, and will be sorely missed.”
Former Council Leader Andrew Johnson said, “ Frances Stainton was a remarkable lady and a real political tour de force in local government. It was a huge privilege to have served with her for eight years on Hammersmith & Fulham Council. Rest in peace, Frances.”
Current councillor for the local ward, now named Parsons Green and Walham, Adrian Pascu-Tulbure said, “ A legend - totally sharp and dedicated right till the end, and a generous source of sound advice, Frances will be much missed by the residents of Parsons Green and Walham, whom she served for over three decades.”
In 2022, Frances, who lived in her ward in Fulham, was awarded the Freedom of the Borough - the highest honour a local authority can bestow - for her service to residents over many years.
While serving as Mayor, she chose to support military charity Walking With The Wounded, whose twitter account is @supportthewalk. Her friend Ed de Guitaut said, “Shocking and very sad news. Frances was a lifelong friend to our family, and I spoke with her only last Thursday — she was so looking forward to meeting up again in two weeks at an event in Fulham.
“ As H&F Mayor in 2011 and 2013 she raised over £100k for @supportthewalk, more than any previous mayor. She will be deeply missed by us all.”
Former Chelsea and Fulham MP Greg Hands said, “Saddened to learn of the death of my great friend & colleague Councillor Frances Stainton.
“ Fulham Councillor 1990-2002, she was a tireless advocate for local people and a great source of advice to me over three decades.
“ May she rest in peace.”
