A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm on Fulham Broadway this Saturday (30 August).
He was detained at around 2:20pm as thousands of football supporters streamed into the area ahead of the London derby between Chelsea and Fulham at Stamford Bridge
Officers responded to reports of a young man “displaying a weapon and walking towards a crowded area,” according to a Met spokesperson. On arrival, they found what appeared to be a realistic-looking handgun tucked into the teenager’s waistband. He was detained under Section 36 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006, which makes it an offence to carry an imitation firearm in public without a reasonable excuse.
The suspect, who was believed to be on his way to join the London Anime and Gaming Con being held at the Novotel Hotel in Hammersmith, was escorted to Fulham Broadway police station. “Fortunately, no one was harmed during this incident,” the spokesperson said. “Our priority was to ensure public safety amid heavy pedestrian traffic from both football fans and eventgoers.”
The proximity of the arrest to the Stamford Bridge stadium led to a brief police cordon on Fulham Broadway, but stewards working for the Premier League clubs reported minimal disruption to fans making their way in for the match.
After questioning, the teenager was released on bail pending further inquiries. Police are now reviewing CCTV footage in the vicinity and appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police, quoting reference CAD 4872/25Aug.
