A woman was rescued from a basement flat fire on Greyhound Road after six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to the scene on Tuesday 21 January.

London Fire Brigade said part of the basement flat was damaged by fire. Four people, including a baby, managed to leave the building before crews arrived. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus later rescued a woman via an internal staircase. She was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service after suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Brigade’s control officers received the first call at 5.27pm and mobilised crews from Fulham, Kensington, Wandsworth, Chelsea, Chiswick and Richmond fire stations. The fire was brought under control by 6.42pm.

Also attending the incident was the Brigade’s Zero Emission Capable Pumping Appliance (ZEPA1), a new type of fire engine currently being trialled at Hammersmith Fire Station. The appliance is part of London Fire Brigade’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. ZEPA1 can operate using battery power for certain tasks, allowing it to attend incidents with reduced noise and zero exhaust emissions when stationary, while still retaining a conventional diesel engine for longer journeys and major incidents. This is the first report of the engine attending an incident.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and was caused by an electrical fault in a consumer unit.

Fire investigators are reminding residents of the importance of having electrical installations regularly checked and ensuring consumer units are properly maintained to reduce the risk of fire.
