Rugby club chairman offers upbeat end of season report
The end of the season has finally arrived for the club and our teams have finished off in style.
Congratulations must go out to the 4th XV for winning the Middlesex Merit Table (MMT) Division Two Final at Wasps training ground, in convincing manner against a strong Rosslyn Park side 34-15.
Not to be left-out in collecting silverware, our youth section had a great month at festival competitions with the U9’s and U10’s winning at the Staines Festival, beating Old Albanians and Rosslyn Park respectively. Also the U8’s and U10’s were runners-up at the London Welsh Festival. The U9’s won the plate competition at London Welsh also, making it a very successful month for the youth section.
In the men’s section our 1st XV completed their London North West Two league matches by winning both games easily, beating Hemel Hempstead and St. Albans to finish fourth in the league.
The 2nd XV played only one game this month beating Kew Occasionals. The team finished mid-table in the Shield league which is what they wanted to achieve this season.
The 3rd XV won their MMT Cup semi-final game against Grasshoppers played under floodlights 29-10 to set-up a final against our own 4th XV, and with the season drawing to an end it was decided to share the MMT Cup between them.
Our 5th XV played a friendly against Teddington, but lost narrowly in a very closely fought game at their ground.
There were no 6th XV’s games this month.
The ladies 1st XV completely overwhelmed Harwich & Dovercroft, beating them 61-0 to finish off their season in style.
Finally our vets travelled to Deal to play in their festival and once again were runners-up in the main competition, with all the players and supporters having great fun throughout the day.
The annual Dinner and Dance at Thames Rowing Club was a sell-out and the largest in the club’s history - with over 145 members & guests attending - and the evening was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of another great season for the club.
In the month of May 2014, the 1st men’s 7’s team won the main Barry Bowden Cup event at the Middlesex 7s at Richmond RFC, beating HAC in the final and the ladies won the Griffin Cup at Finchley RFC. Well done to both teams.
I would like to thank all teams, captains, players and coaches for helping to make this another highly successful season once again for the club as a whole and I look forward to the club once again improving on and off the field of play in 2014-2015.
