Fulham Branch of M&S to Close on Saturday 8 September

Departure will leave large empty area in centre of Fulham

M&S on Fulham has confirmed it will close its doors on Saturday 8 September.

The impending closure was first announced in July after M&S decided not to renew its lease on this store and another in Ruislip.

In July, Nick Pucci, head of region for London at M&S said: "The decision not to renew our leases and therefore close our small food stores in Ruislip High Street and Fulham Island was a difficult one to make.

"We've got brilliant teams at both stores, with 40 colleagues at Fulham Island and 35 at Ruislip, and they will all move to nearby M&S stores."

The closure will leave a large part of Fulham Island sitting empty. The large neighbouring site which was vacated by North African restaurant and cafe Del Aziz in December remains empty eight months later. In fact its departure was so sudden that tables remain laid and Christmas lights are still hung above the door.

Across the street another large site, formerly housing estate agent Barnard Marcus remains empty and this month The Elk Bar opposite the site also shut up shop.

casualty in what is turning out to be a desperate year for the retail and hospitality industries, with a number of major chains being forced to close stores and restaurants across London and the country.

In our borough, closures this year have included Warren Evans and Maplin's, though there was relief for staff at department store House of Fraser in Westfield in Shepherd's Bush last week when it was not included among a list of 31 stores due to shut their doors early next year, including its flagship store in Oxford Street.
