HAFAD’s second Swimathon, which takes place on May 20, 2012 at Fulham Pools, is aiming to raise over £12,000 to help pay for essential services and campaign for local disabled people’s rights.

The first Swimathon in 2011 was a great success, raising over £6000 with 29 participants swimming over 27 miles. This year the plan is to double the swimmers, the distance and the money.

James Coke, Fundraiser and organiser of the event says:

" Last years swim was great and we are keen to replicate its success. We have managed to recruit more swimmers this year who are as keen as mustard to pound those lengths and raise some cash”.

Disability affects up to 30,000 people in the borough and nationally it is estimated 11 million people have an impairment.  “It’s not something you can just push under the carpet and hope it will go away”, Coke added. “We’ve helped people for over 30 years in the borough and events of this nature raise awareness, help support services and give vital self esteem to participants, particular those with disabilities”.

Last year several of the swimmers were young HAFAD members and the money they raised went towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards.  Coke added, “The fact they were raising money learning new skills and taking control, is rewarding for them and positive for society in general”.

Local estate agent, Aspire, are sponsoring the Swimathon. Tom Ward, Director of Aspire said “It is great to be involved with such a local grass roots charity who help so many people in this community”. He added ‘There are a few of our chaps diving in for HAFAD and hopefully they will raise a lot of money, for a worthy cause.”
