Yes, music is the love of food

It started with a chat between two neighbours. She happened to be a food bank volunteer. Turned out he’s the lead singer in a band. 
He generously offered a cash donation and dropped into St Simon’s food bank in Shepherd Bush to deliver it. But after a cup of tea and a slice of cake he suggested his band, the one and only Police Dog Hogan, staged a fund raiser for Hammersmith & Fulham food banks. 
Bush Hall was hired, 500 music lovers turned up and the band played their rollicking mix of banjo, violin, trumpet and guitar. Much foot tapping, hand clapping and singing along. Beers and cheers.
It was that kind of event. 
But above all, the evening raised about £10,000.    £10,000! I’ll leave it to you to work out how many tins of corned beef that can buy. (Very popular corned beef among food bank regulars. Trouble is, we haven’t been able to provide any for many months). 
As the band sang at Bush Hall: ‘The light at the end of the tunnel is shining once again.’ 
Let’s hope it does for the people who rely on us for food.

Not quite as much fun, the collection at Sainsbury’s, Fulham Wharf, at the end of April. Once again shoppers were incredibly generous, giving 1.7 tonnes of food worth more than £5,500. It makes such a difference. The numbers in need are rising; supplies are falling. 
Thank you to everyone who contributed with food or cash and a shout out to the corporate volunteers from Phoenix Staffing and Burberry. Great stuff, thank you.
And there’s more! We’ll be manning (and woman-ing?) a stall at the Wandsworth Bridge Road Spring Fayre on Sunday May, 12. 
Last year’s Fayre attracted over 14,000 visitors to the market stalls, street food, Arts & Crafts, games and live music. There’ll be a Maypole, funfair stalls and a climbing wall.

Please can someone help settle an argument between two friends of mine who grew up within walking distance of Greyhound Road and yet have completely differing opinions as to whether it is Hammersmith or Fulham.

Musical Museum survival appeal update.

I posted on the forum on 2 February to publicise the predicament of the Musical Museum in Brentford https://www.musicalmuseum.co.uk/ It is in danger of closing due to expenses which exceed its resources. The Museum launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise the £60,000 needed to secure its future and the appeal has so far raised £26,998. That's tremendous progress, but still less than half what's needed. There will of course be a strong push back using the NHS procedural checks: (1) such a major change requires Consultation with patients (2) It requires a financial analysis and justification to the NHS Region (3) It is subject to "call in" by the S of State for Health. And there are other important checks in the NHS "procedure". Hammersmith Council is of course lending the campaign its support.

double room wanted

Hello, I am a mature IT-sales professional, looking for a double room. Musical Museum survival appeal.

I'm a volunteer tour guide at the Musical Museum in Brentford, London. https://www.musicalmuseum.co.uk/

It is a very satisfying role because I watch the delight and wonder on the visitors' faces when they see and hear the instruments used for music reproduction through the ages. We have musical boxes, polyphons (the precursors of juke boxes) self-playing organs and pianos including player pianos and reproducing pianos that play the actual performances of famous pianists of the past including Gershwin, Rachmaninoff and many others. There are phonographs, gramophones, juke boxes that play 78s and a mighty Wurlitzer Cinema organ in our concert hall. The collection is of national and international importance because it restores and preserves working examples of extremely rare instruments.

Loss of income during the Covid shutdown followed by huge inflation in the museum's costs mean that the museum can no longer pay its way so this year, our 60th, might be the last. We have trimmed our costs to the bone but must find money urgently to keep the doors open as we change the way we operate.

If you value a historic musical resource, you may wish to support the museum's survival crowdfunder but if it doesn't seem that important to you, I understand that and I apologise for the intrusion. Here's the crowdfunder link.

Local Labour MPs Rebel on Gaza Ceasefire Vote

Both Rupa Huq and Andy Slaughter refused to support Sir Keir Starmer. A total of 54 MPs rebelled.  The Labour Party is not in such a strong position that they can start to rebel BEFORE they have been elected to office. Just saying....

HF Council seeks to borrow to invest in Green Projects

Don't do it. "Green projects" are not grounded in economics. They are in a separate world of "Carbon credits", aka "snake oil projects". Unfortunately the world is about to discover that in the real world we need oil and gas to produce the huge variety of fuels and oils, plastics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, agrochemicals and many other products which we use in the modern world. There are other alternative pathways but they start from either coal or cellulose from plants and are more expensive. Organic Chemistry matters. Sorry.

I am not surprised that the playground in Ravenscourt Park is in a dire state, and that others in Hammersmith are similarly run down. I'm sorry, but I think that you are going to have to act yourself. Do some fund-raising. Would local business (e.g. estate agents) be willing to give you small amounts of money (a few £100s) to restore them in exchange for advertising? Or get together with other parents and DIY?  It is generally not difficult, but often time-consuming and requires some specialist tools (hire from "Library of Things") and materials such as special paints. I am thinking of the example of Karen Liebreich and her "Abundance" project where she single-handedly motivated local gardeners to fund-raise, plant and look after small and abandoned Council-owned gardens in Chiswick. At the last Full Council Meeting on Wednesday Hammersmith Council was discussing how to raise loans as efficiently as possible. It is as cash-strapped as all Councils, but not near bankruptcy. These are very hard times for public bodies.

School Buildings H&F

Looks like the proposed new school building and housing is no longer going ahead at the Flora Gardens site. Seems Ravenscourt Action Group scored a victory. Heard that kids are being moved to vacant Lena Gardens site, and nothing planned for the Flora Gardens site. So — what will they do with that very valuable land?

Clean Air Neighbourhood in Hurlingham and South Park, between New King's Road and Wandsworth Bridge

Anyone wanting to drive through the triangular area between the New Kings' Road and Wandsworth Bridge Road is running a gauntlet of traffic cameras. See map at bottom of https://www.lbhf.gov.uk/articles/news/2023/01/warning-period-non-hf-drivers-ends-31-january-clean-air-neighbourhood-trial?dm_i=BGN,86FJ8,NC73MX,XIQTA,1 As locals we might be aware, but anyone else is liable to caught because there are no signs at the entrance of each and every one of the small streets off the New King's Road or Wandsworth Bridge Rd. And all this does is push traffic onto the main roads, which adds to the pollution in those relatively deprived flats and houses along the main roads. This is not sensible. And of course this is all part of the "war on cars". We see you!
