Five people had to be assisted out a burning building by firefighters and another 30 were evacuated as a precaution after a fire broke out in flats on Hammersmith Road.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called to the fire in a six storey block of flats early on Friday morning.

Ten per cent of the sixth floor flat was damaged by fire. It is believed the fire started in the kitchen and may have been caused by the careless disposal of a cigarette. For smoking fire safety advice go to the Brigade’s website.

Fire crews from Hammersmith, Fulham and Kensington fire stations were called to the scene at 4.12 am and the fire was under control by 4.59am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
