A dynamic
mix of dialogue, dance and glitterball @
Riverside Studios.
Book now for this revealing new play about love, age and sex set at a
tea-dance on the south coast of England.
Writer John Retallack was inspired by the stories of a lively group of
tea-dancers at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill on Sea. Commissioned by
DLWP to write a play about his observations, Ballroom is a chance to glimpse
into the surprising lives of the silver-haired who are increasingly overlooked
by a society geared towards the young.
In a half-empty dancehall, in the quiet of the afternoon, Roy, Audrey,
Sylvia and Victor step softly into a new phase of their lives – one of
opportunity, independence, friendship and desire.
As the rhythms of the dance take over, their poignant, funny and fantastic
memories are punctuated with glittering flashbacks, up-tempo dance sequences
and the magnificent sound of the big band.
The dynamic mix of dialogue, dance and
glitterball has found a top creative team of John Retallack, Jack Murphy
and Karl James. John was previously director of Oxford Stage Company and
now of company of angels, responsible for the phenomenally successful
Hannah and Hanna and a leader in the field of new work. Jack Murphy, director
and choreographer has worked extensively for the RNT and the RSC as well
as film work including Vanity Fair and Bridget Jones 2. Karl James has
worked internationally and in the UK as a leading composer of music for
new stage work.
Enjoy up-tempo dance sequences
and sounds inspired by the big band…
