Hammersmith Covid-19 Rates at Record Levels

Further increases feared as Omicron becomes dominant strain

The government have increased the availability of booster jabs recently

The Hammersmith area is believed to currently have its highest ever Covid-19 infection rates.

In a recent weeks in some neighbourhoods over 1% of residents have tested positive for the virus.

At the moment, the infections are still a mix of the Delta and Omicron strains, but this week nearly three quarters of positive tests showed markers for Omicron.

In the Fulham Reach area 100 people tested positive in the week to 12 December to give an infection rate per 100,000 population of 1,187.8. Barons Court was close behind at 1,146.4 and the Hammersmith Broadway area also had a rate above 1,000.

The rises are most concentrated in younger age groups, but infections are increasing across the board.

The data suggests Omicron is much more transmissible but may typically have milder symptoms although it is too early to speak conclusively. Local health officials are saying that two doses of the vaccine are less effective at protecting against Omicron infection and it is very important to get the booster jab for increased immunity.

The rise in hospital and ICU admissions has been slow so far and the indications are that the double-jabbed retain protection against serious illness.

Hammersmith & Fulham is currently the borough with the second highest infection rate in London at 824 cases in a week per 100,000 population. This compares to Lambeth, the borough with the highest rate, at 836.

The total number of COVID-19 cases identified in London is 1,448,478 as at 15 December, this compares to 9,420,017 cases for England as a whole.

In the week to 11 December, 59,379 cases were identified in London, a rate of 660 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 41,821 cases and a rate of 464 for the previous week.
