76 Year Old Man Stabbed for £20

Incident took place at Welcome Co-Op in Shepherd's Bush

Police are appealing for information and witnesses following a robbery in which a 76-year-old man was stabbed three times for £20.

At 08:50 on Saturday 11th June the victim - a retired man from Shepherd's Bush - went into ‘Welcome Co-Op’ shop, Uxbridge Road, Shepherds Bush to buy a newspaper.

He approached the counter and as he went to hand over a £20 note a man behind him snatched it out of his hand. The victim turned and challenged this man. Following an exchange of words the suspect stabbed the victim three times - twice in the chest and once in the arm. The suspect then fled pursued by the victim who initially thought he had been punched. However he stopped when he noticed blood on his chest.

The police and an ambulance were called and the victim was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was treated and discharged on Monday 13th June. He is now recovering at home.

The suspect was described as black, 6’ tall. He had short hair which was combed up at the front. He wore a top which was dark grey across shoulders and had a wide red band on the bottom and bearing a ‘05’ on the back and sleeves, light blue jeans, white trainers with bright red heels and a large band wrist watch.

PC Pam Dhillon from Hammersmith Robbery Squad who is investigating the incident said: “This was a very nasty attack on an elderly man who simply went out that morning to buy a newspaper. The suspect is clearly a very dangerous man as he was willing to stab a pensioner twice in the chest for the sake of £20. The victim’s injuries could have been far worse and it is only good luck that we are not investigating a murder."
