Commuters using Ravenscourt Park Underground Station are being urged to stay vigilant after reports of a suspected pickpocketing gang operating around the station during the morning rush hour.
According to police, a group of four suspects, believed to consist of two men and two women, has been targeting passengers entering and leaving the station. The warning follows the theft of a mobile phone worth around £1,000 on Tuesday. Although the suspects were chased immediately after the incident, they managed to escape.
Officers have since received information suggesting the same group may have been carrying out similar offences throughout the summer, reportedly operating around three times a week between 9am and 11am. The gang is also believed to have targeted commuters at Turnham Green and Chiswick Park stations.
Police say the suspects' method involves loitering around ticket barriers and identifying potential victims before following them onto station stairways. In the most recent incident, a female commuter was listening to music through wireless headphones when the audio suddenly stopped halfway up the stairs. She turned to see a man running away and then realised her phone had been removed from her pocket. The loss of the Bluetooth connection alerted her to the theft.
Witnesses described one male suspect as being aged around 28 to 30, approximately 173cm tall, with a slim build, light brown shaved hair and a slight beard. He was wearing a black tracksuit and carrying a white rucksack. A second male suspect was described as aged between 28 and 31, around 170cm tall, with a medium build, light brown shaved hair, a slight beard, grey trousers and a dark grey jumper. Two female accomplices were also reported to have been involved.
PC Joanne Day of the Metropolitan Police's Ravenscourt Ward said British Transport Police are reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation. Additional patrols are being conducted where possible and the issue has been raised with Metropolitan Police intelligence teams in the hope that plain-clothes officers can be deployed.
Residents and commuters are being advised to remain aware of their surroundings, particularly when using stairways and station entrances. Anyone who sees individuals behaving suspiciously around Tube stations, particularly if they appear to be watching passengers closely, is encouraged to note descriptions and contact police immediately while suspects remain on the scene.
