A One Woman Show about the first black woman to reach the Antarctic
Mojisola Adebayo performs her one woman show inspired by the real life story of Ellen Craft, an African-American slave who escaped to freedom by disguising herself as a white man, becoming the first black woman to set foot on Antarctica.
Created following a recent trip to the frozen continent, Moj of the Antarctic brings together a collective of artists including original work by acclaimed visual artist, Del LaGrace Volcano, directed by choreographer Sheron Wray and music by composer Juwon Ogungbe and DJ Felony D. Working collaboratively for the first time, the show fuses live performance, music and photographic projections to explore a forgotten gem of black history.
Moj extends Ellen Craft’s inspiring biography, Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom, into a flight of theatrical fantasy, drawing inspiration from contemporary drag performance and vaudeville transvestism. The show also addresses current ecological issues surrounding global warming, Antarctic melting and coastal erosion of historical slave sites in Africa.
Mojisola Adebayo is a performer, writer and director. Her career spans street rap theatre and pantomime, physical theatre, large-scale site-specific events, television and performance poetry. Her acting credits include Visible (RSC/Cardboard Citizens), The Bill (Thames) and The Clinic (RTE). She currently stars in RTE’s Fair City. She has also directed over thirty UK productions including Tales of the Emerald City (Showhow).
Del LaGrace Volcano is a prolific and celebrated queer photographer and film-maker whose work focuses on sexuality and gender. Previous published work includes Love Bites, The Drag King Book, Sublime Mutations and Sex Works.
