Construction still ongoing at Civic Campus site
June 13, 2025
The major new Civic Campus complex in Hammersmith is expected to open to the public within six months after a rough opening date was given. The project will see restaurants, rooftop bars and work spaces introduced to the King Street site.
It will also feature a refurbished town hall and amenities including a new cinema. A residential block of 204 flats, 52 per cent of which are affordable, has already been completed.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) revealed in April that work on the Civic Campus was expected to be finished before the end of this year. This will be several years later than originally planned, with approval granted for the scheme in 2019.
Progress has been hampered in large part due to an accident in 2022 which seriously injured two builders. Council Leader Stephen Cowan has previously acknowledged the incident, alongside pressures such as Brexit, had pushed work back.
A spokesperson for Hammersmith and Fulham Council said at the time that the local authority was working with the developer Ardmore to confirm a revised programme for completion. In April the LDRS spoke with a worker on-site who said the intention was to have construction finished by October.
While they did not confirm that particular deadline, a council spokesperson did say work is expected to be finished by the end of 2025.
The LDRS has now seen correspondence from an internal council call which indicates staff will be relocating to the Civic Campus in early 2026. It also suggests the complex will be opened to the public in March, with ceremonies and events planned.
A spokesperson for the council said, “The Civic Campus will deliver one of Britain’s most exciting new arts, cultural, business, government and community quarters. It will boost the borough’s economy and – in line with our Upstream London vision – deliver inclusive growth for the benefit of all residents.
“It will be a fully accessible space, co-designed with residents, and an environmentally positive development, featuring solar panels and innovative ground source heat pumps. Residents have already started moving into the new homes of which more than 50 per cent are genuinely affordable.
“Council staff will start working from the Civic Campus early in the new year as we finalise the works to provide a modern new quarter where people can live, work, play and relax.”

HammersmithToday.co.uk revealed in June that Curzon will be taking on the cinema space at the Civic Campus replacing the former Art Deco cinema demolished in 2017.
A council spokesperson previously said they were in negotiations with Curzon to open the five-screen cinema coming to the Civic Campus, which they added would “transform the western end of King Street”.
