In Parliament recently I spoke in the debate on the phase two report of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. A lot has happened in the seven and a half years since the Grenfell Tower fire but there has been no accountability and insufficient movement on remediation of buildings, even those with flammable cladding. Grenfell has had a profound impact across west London, and I will continue to push in parliament for recommended building safety regulations and remediations as well as for justice for the survivors and families of victims.
The Justice Select Committee has been busy in the last couple of weeks. We recently launched our first inquiry, titled ‘Rehabilitation and resettlement: ending the cycle of reoffending’. We have also been continuing with public evidence sessions, we recently spoke to the Director of Public Prosecutions and look forward to the upcoming evidence session on the 17th of December with the Lord Chancellor.
Last week I attended a drop in event in Parliament by the Benedict Blythe Foundation, about making schools safe places for children with allergies. I also managed to pop into the RSPCA and Dogs Trust drop in about the Fireworks Bill last week, the Bill seeks to restrict sale of fireworks, reduce the noise level of fireworks sold to the public and to only allow the sale of fireworks from licensed shops.
It has been a busy few weeks in the lead up to Christmas and I have been enjoying seeing how the celebrations have begun across the constituency. Recently I enjoyed seeing the donkeys in Wendell Park as well as joining my colleague Ben Coleman in Fulham to see the St Eth's camel procession. I also had the chance to attend the lighting of the Brackenbury Residents Association Christmas tree on Friday which was great fun. As the evenings keep getting darker it is great to see trees and lights going up across Hammersmith as we get closer to Christmas.
Elsewhere in the constituency I was pleased to be able to drop in at the Festive Flow session at Lumi Power Yoga on King Street, in support of the Lumi Foundation. The Lumi Foundation is an award-winning charity that aims to make yoga accessible to everyone.
Last week I was also delighted to unveil a commemorative plaque at Latymer Upper School to celebrate the school’s 400-year anniversary. Finally, The PTA at West London Free School are raising money to make their playground a greener and more inviting place, you can find out more about their campaign here.
