Hammersmith BID is marking Women’s History Month this March with a programme of events that celebrates the women who have shaped the local area.

The month’s activities bring together guided walks, a photographic exhibition created with women with lived experience, a practical workshop and a forum on safety, offering multiple ways for residents, workers and visitors to get involved.

Led by Ann, an expert Blue Badge Guide, the Women of Hammersmith walks trace the lives and legacies of local women from different eras. The route highlights figures such as Annie Cobden Sanderson, an early supporter of women’s suffrage who served on the Hammersmith Board of Guardians, and Dame Elvira Matthews, who led the Women’s Royal Naval Service during the Second World War, alongside contemporary names including Hammersmith-born musician Arlo Parks.

The walks are designed to build connections between participants and to deepen appreciation of the women whose stories are woven into the borough.

Walk dates and times are:

Saturday 7 March, 11.00–12.00
Tuesday 10 March, 12.30–13.30
Tuesday 31 March, 12.30–13.30

Livat Hammersmith will host Advance’s Walking in Her Shoes photographic exhibition throughout March. Created in partnership with women with lived experience, the exhibition features images that capture moments of joy and personal meaning, each accompanied by reflections on the photographer’s journey. Advance, a Hammersmith-based charity, supports women and girls affected by domestic abuse and those involved in the criminal justice system, offering advocacy and practical programmes through its women’s centres.

A special Open Evening will take place on Thursday 12 March, 17.30–18.30, when Advance’s Lived Experience Ambassadors will speak about the stories behind the images and explain how local businesses can support the charity’s work. The exhibition will remain on display at Livat before being permanently housed across Advance Women’s Centres. Attendees are invited to RSVP for the Open Evening at Livat by emailing a.altenausmith@hammersmithbid.co.uk.

Hammersmith BID will host a Women’s Safety Forum on Tuesday 31 March. Further details will be announced, but the forum is intended as a space for local partners, businesses and residents to discuss practical measures that improve safety and accessibility for women across the town centre.

On Saturday 14 March, 13.00–15.00, Livat Hammersmith will run a flower-making workshop led by Marisol. Participants will learn to create a fabric flower to personalise clothing; all materials and guidance will be provided and attendees should bring the garment they wish to embellish. The session is pitched as a creative, social way to mark the month and celebrate women’s creativity. Reserve your spot by clicking here.
