This Thursday (24 February) IKEA opened its new small format store in Hammersmith with hundreds of people turning up to get a first look.

A series of events to mark the opening is continuing through the weekend with kids entertainment and workshops for customers.

Reactions so far to the store have been mixed. Helen, who says she lives close enough to walk to the store said, “I think it is amazing and I love the look and feel of the new centre which was frankly grim before. I love IKEA products but don’t own a car so getting to Brent Cross was a challenge. I’m going to be a regular here.”

Patrick, who also lives in Hammersmith was less impressed saying, “Basically it takes the stress induced by a visit to the large format store and intensifies it by cramming everyone into a smaller space. There may be more people there because it has just opened but I don’t think fewer people would make the experience much better. I haven’t been to IKEA since Wilko opened in Hammersmith and the latter remains better value.”

The store stocks 1,800 products which are available to take away on the day and 4,000 will be on display in store including those that can be ordered.

A quarter of the size of a traditional IKEA store, the company says it will create 140 jobs in the area.

Customers familiar with the traditional Market Hall layout in larger blue box stores can now find the products located next to the roomsets they represent.

Balloon modellers and magicians will be at the store on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February, with a treasure hunt also taking place for some family fun.

Pritesh Patel, IKEA Hammersmith Store Manager commented, “After years in the making, we’re delighted to be opening the doors to our new IKEA Hammersmith store, marking the first-time customers will be able to access our range on the high street.”

“Our 140 new co-workers are excited to be welcoming customers from the local area and beyond, helping them to create the home they deserve, through their expertise.”

IKEA Family members will have access to a number of opening offers, with up to 30% off selected products until 31st March. For those not already signed up, customers can join IKEA Family for free either in store or online for access to member discounts, exclusive workshops and events, plus a free hot drink Monday – Friday.

IKEA Hammersmith is within 'Livat Hammersmith’ – the rebranded Kings Mall Shopping Centre by Ingka Centres.
