Second Hand September is on its way - and Hammersmith’s fashionistas will have plenty of opportunities to get into the spirit and swap their unwanted clothes.

Second Hand September is an initiative from Oxfam, urging people to take a stance against the impact of fast fashion and help to create a fairer world by shopping and donating pre-loved clothes.

King Street’s Livat shopping centre is taking up the challenge with a two day “Back to Uni” Sustainable Style Swap on 5 and 6 September from 12.30pm till 6.30pm.

To take part, people can bring along up to six items of adult clothing and can then choose one “swapped” item for each item donated.

Sustainable Stylist, Sophia Lorimer, founder of Fine-Tuned Wardrobe will be at the swap on Thursday September 5, providing free fashion consultations and style advice. Livat is also collaborating with Colechi, sustainable focused crochet collective, offering the opportunity to learn some basic crochet skills, and everyone participating will also have the chance to win one of ten £10 Livat vouchers.

Find out more about taking part here.

On Thursday September 12, the fashion action moves to 245 Hammersmith Road, where a clothes swap will be open from 12 pm till 6 pm, with a Sip ‘n’ Swap taking place from 4 pm till 6 pm, offering the chance to network and enjoy some drinks and nibbles while you swap.

This event is hosted by Hammersmith BID, who say that previous clothes swaps have saved over 700kg and 2,400 items of clothing from ending up in landfill.

Again, participants can donate up to six clothing items, which can be swapped for up to six new-to-you garments. Surplus clothing from the event will be used at a future clothes swap or donated to local charity shops in Hammersmith, such as Traid and Royal Trinity Hospice.

If you have a favourite item of clothing which is in need of repair, save it from the bin by heading for Livat’s Clothes Mending Circle Workshop on 28 September.

The drop in workshop takes place from 1pm till 3pm and participants can bring one item to practise with and learn some basic mending skills. Find out more at here.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
