A Mathnasium, a private maths tutoring centre for children, could be opening soon in Brook Green.

Planning permission consultancy 4D Planning has submitted an application to H&F Council to change the use of the premises at 136 Shepherd’s Bush Road - formerly The Furniture Gallery - from retail to education.

The application, which can be viewed on the council’s website using the reference 2024/02145/FUL is for:

Change of use of ground floor and basement from retail (Class E) into an Educational Centre (Class F1-A).

A second application, ref 2024/02146/ADV has been submitted for:

Display of an externally illuminated fascia sign to replace the existing sign at the front elevation.

The application by the consultancy has been made on behalf of Dan Tregoning, who is already the Centre Director at the Mathnasium in Fulham Road.

Mathnasium was launched in 2002 and has now opened almost 1,200 centres in 15 countries, including over 30 in this country. As well as Fulham, nearby centres have also opened in Chiswick, Ealing, Notting Hill and South Kensington.

The centres, which typically employ around three full time and 20 part time staff members, offer supplementary maths education for children aged four to 16.

A planning statement accompanying the application says that the proposed change to an educational use “ will align with the community-focussed nature of the area”.

The statement adds: “ The choice to open a Mathnasium facility in close proximity of a designated town centre is deliberate. Mathnasiums across the UK have demonstrated that such locations are crucial for successful operations, as they allow parents to utilise high street services while their children receive tuition.”

As sessions last 60 - 90 minutes, and parents are encouraged not to stay on the premises, the statement says that locations are chosen for their proximity to neighbouring businesses where parents can spend time, such as supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants. It says: “ Shepherd’s Bush Road’s retail demographic closely aligns with that of Mathnasium's other locations, making it an ideal choice.”

The premises at 136 Shepherd's Bush Road had been available to rent since the closure of The Furniture Gallery. The Gallery meanwhile announced last month that it had closed both its physical retail store and online store, but hoped that its online store would return.
