The Boots store in Hammersmith Broadway Shopping Centre
August 12, 2024
Sainsbury’s has confirmed its plans to move into Hammersmith Broadway shopping centre.
A spokesman for the supermarket says the new Sainsbury’s Local store is scheduled to open in spring 2025.
The store will take over Units 30 - 32, the premises recently vacated by Boots in the centre of the shopping centre.
Hammersmith & Fulham Council has approved an application submitted by the supermarket for a Premises Licence, though it will not open around the clock as in the original application, but from 6am till midnight every day.
These hours are in line with Hammersmith Broadway’s existing supermarket, the Tesco Express at the southern end of the centre.
The spokesman adds, “ We’re not at the recruitment stage just yet but we expect around 20 roles to be advertised within the store nearer to the time.”
The store will sit alongside a larger Sainsbury’s within the Livat shopping centre in King Street.
The units became empty last month when Boots - a longstanding part of the centre’s retail mix - suddenly closed, with staff seen behind the shutters emptying its shelves.
Last month, the chain announced the closure of around 300 stores nationwide, with its chief executive saying it is facing “ a difficult operating environment.”
However, the Hammersmith shutdown came as a surprise to many shoppers, as it was not on the company’s list of proposed London closures. However, a spokesperson said, “Sadly, we can confirm that the Boots store in Hammersmith Broadway closed at the weekend.”
The chain appears to be closing smaller branches which have larger stores nearby, and Hammersmith falls into that category, as Boots of course has a large store a short walk away on the south side of King Street.
