Budget chain Poundland has confirmed that its Hammersmith store is one of several outlets set to close in the coming weeks as part of a major restructuring programme. The retailer announced this Friday (5 December) that a further tranche of shops will cease trading by early February, adding to the more than 100 closures already scheduled across the UK.
The Hammersmith branch is due to close on Christmas Eve with clearance sales already underway offering discounts of up to 40% on homeware, groceries, clothing, and beauty items.
The closures follow a turbulent year for Poundland. In June, the chain was sold by its former parent company Pepco Group to US investment firm Gordon Brothers for just £1, saving it from administration. The new owners have since embarked on a restructuring plan to reduce the chain from around 800 stores to between 650 and 700, focusing on profitability and trimming underperforming sites.
Barry Williams, Poundland’s managing director, said earlier this week, “It’s no secret that we have much work to do to get Poundland back on track. Closing weaker stores is part of ensuring we can secure the future of the business on Britain’s high streets.”
The closure of the Hammersmith branch will be felt locally, as the store has long been a fixture of the town centre, offering low-cost essentials to residents particularly after the loss of Wilko. Clearance sales are expected to continue until the final trading day, with remaining stock heavily discounted.
While Poundland has stressed that the closures are necessary to stabilise the business, the announcement adds to wider concerns about the health of Britain’s high streets, particularly in London where rising rents and changing shopping habits have put pressure on retailers.
