Hitting the Ground Running After Christmas Festivities

Report back from Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith and Chiswick

Andy Slaughter MP at the H&F Big Christmas Lunch

January 13, 2025

Over the festive period I had the pleasure of enjoying many celebrations across the constituency. I was delighted to celebrate Chanukah at the menorah lighting in Lyric Square, organised by Councillor Laura Janes, with Rabbis Burden and Krichevsky.

On Christmas day, I was pleased to be able to attend the brilliant Hammersmith and Fulham Big Christmas Day Lunch at the Novotel with hundreds of older residents who would otherwise have spent Christmas alone. It was brilliant to see many people who would otherwise have been on their own enjoy lunch, gifts and dancing.

I was also grateful to have been invited to give a reading for the first time at St Nicholas Church in Old Chiswick as part of the carol concert. The concert was wonderful, and it was great to celebrate my first Christmas as MP for Chiswick with residents.

On New Year’s Day I had the pleasure of attending the New Year service at the London Vihara. At the service, I received blessings from the Chief Sangha Nayaka of Great Britain and Head Monk of the Vihara, Most Ven Bogoda Seelawimala Thera.

I was also lucky to be able to be able to attend the St Michael and All Angels New Year’s Day concert of Viennese music. The music was wonderful, and it was a great way to celebrate the new year.

Of course, with the new year came the New Year’s Honours List, and I must give my congratulations to three-time Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, and to Emily Thornberry, on well-deserved awards.

Now that the festive period is over, we are hitting the ground running in Parliament. Looking ahead, 2025 will be a busy year starting with announcements on the NHS, and in the Justice Select Committee, we are launching two inquiries into prisons on rehabilitation and drugs.
