James Cracknell (centre) holds the ribbon as the Deputy Mayor prepares to cut
February 17, 2025
The new Sainsbury’s Local store in the Hammersmith Broadway Shopping Centre was officially opened last Thursday (13 February).
Olympic gold medallist, James Cracknell was on hand to hold the ribbon as the Deputy Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Cllr Daryl Brown, wielded an oversized pair of scissors.
The rowing champion and local resident said, “This a great addition to the area. Many people use this space on their way to work or to attractions like the Apollo, so having this store will make a huge difference’’
The first ever Sainsbury’s Local was opened on Fulham Palace Road in 1998.
The new store is taking over units formerly occupied by Boots in the middle of the shopping centre which closed its local store last year as part of a nationwide rationalisation which saw it depart 300 locations.
Cllr Brown said, “On behalf of the Hammersmith and Fulham Council, I am delighted to welcome Sainsbury’s to Hammersmith Broadway. The store looks amazing and aesthetically pleasing, which will encourage customers to come in. The location is very convenient for our local community and visitors travelling by bus and train. I would like to wish Sainsbury’s and their team the very best of luck.”
Patrick Dunne, Chief Product Officer at Sainsbury’s, added, “We opened our first Sainsbury's convenience store in Hammersmith in 1998 and over twenty-five years on, we're thrilled to bring another Sainsbury's Local to the area, in Hammersmith Broadway Shopping Centre. As well as creating new jobs for the community, our new Local store will build on the success of our other Hammersmith stores by offering even more delicious food, convenience and choice to more of our customers here.
"We're determined to be our customers' First Choice for Food and we have a fantastic pipeline of new Sainsbury's Locals planned for this year – today's launch in Hammersmith marks the 6th convenience store we have opened so far in 2025."
The new Sainsbury’s store is now open from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.
